Christ has no body but yours

This coming Sunday is “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday at Ascension. Our hands will be put to work after worship to assemble packages for people served by local food pantries. Each kit delivered will be part of God’s work in the world.

I’m not sure how leaders at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America came to choose the phrase “God’s Work, Our Hands” for this annual day of community service. I’ve always suspected it was inspired by a poem by Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Catholic nun who spent much of her life in prayer and contemplation. Her poem goes like this:

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

This poem certainly captures the spirit of “God’s Work, Our Hands” as it invites us to serve as Christ’s hands, feet, and eyes.

If we stop to think about it, however, it might seem a bit strange that a woman who spent her life inside a convent seeking a mystical union with God should write such an activist poem, exhorting us to put our faith into practice by doing Christ’s work.

Part of the explanation is that the convent was not a haven from the world for Teresa. The convent offered plenty of opportunities to be of practical service.

But as a person of prayer and contemplation, Teresa would have focused not so much on what we can do for Christ, but rather on what Christ is doing in us.

Teresa would remind us that Christ is still working. Christ’s pleasure and desire is to work through flesh and blood; it is Christ’s nature to take flesh in the world, to be present with us here and now. Christ invites us to join him in the ways that he is already present in the world to heal,

bless, and serve.

What Would Dolly Do?

The death of Dolly Parton on August 25 unleashed a torrent of tributes from

across the cultural and religious spectrum, confirming her status as one of the

nation’s few non-polarizing figures. She was celebrated not only for her

music but for her kindness, philanthropy, and positivity.

As the granddaughter of a Pentecostal preacher, Parton was steeped in the

Bible. She learned to sing in church, and topics of faith were naturally

threaded into her lyrics, which as one commentator said, touched on hope,

home, happiness, and “the exasperating nature of all men excepting Jesus.”

Yet, as an adult she was never part of a congregation and she generally steered

clear of religious and moral debates. When pressed about her affirmation of

gays and lesbians—not a given in the conservative-leaning Christian world of

country music—she replied: “I keep saying, ‘Well, if you’re the fine Christian

you think you are, why are you judging people? That’s God’s job. We’re not

God. We’re not judges. We’re supposed to love one another. We’re supposed

to not judge and we’re not supposed to take vengeance on other people.”

“We’re supposed to love one another.” Parton boils the Christian way of life

down to a few words. That much she took from her Pentecostal upbringing,

and in the way she lived out those words, they were hardly trivial.

I had never thought to put Dolly Parton and the apostle Paul in the same

sentence, but in this week’s reading we find Paul also boiling down the

Christian way of life to love. All the commandments, he says, “are summed

up in this word, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Romans 13:9).

By “love” Paul (and Parton too) is not referring merely to a warm feeling but

to concrete action—treating others with a generosity and grace that reflects

the generosity and grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Proclaiming the “law of love” is not necessarily the end of the discussion, in

the Bible or in our everyday life. Sometimes we puzzle over the form that

love should take in a particular situation. We may wonder if it is possible to

love without ever judging. That struggle would make a good Dolly Parton

song.

Still, love is the starting place, Paul says, and we know, as Parton did, that

whatever love entails, it (as Paul says elsewhere) “is patient; love is kind;

love is not envious or boastful or arrogant . . .” (1 Corinthians 13:4).

Carrying the Cross

Jesus said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and

take up their cross and follow me.”

The citizens of the Roman Empire were familiar with crosses. They were erected

outside the cities of the Roman Empire for the execution of criminals and

disobedient slaves. Crucifixion was the favored form of execution, because it was

so excruciating and humiliating. The display of crosses made a point. The leaders

of the empire were making sure everyone knew the terrible fate that awaited them

if they disobeyed their masters or rebelled against the emperor. (I’m relying here

on historian Tom Holland’s account in his 2019 book Dominion.)

Crucifixion was not a topic that educated Romans liked to think about—which

explains why, though this form of execution was widely used and accepted, there

are few written accounts of it by writers of the ancient world. Among the accounts

we have of crucifixion, four of them describe the execution of the same person.

The victim was a wandering preacher from an obscure town north of Jerusalem; he

was called Jesus of Nazareth. The four accounts of his crucifixion are found in the

four Gospels.

Those Gospel writers claimed that this crucified man was in truth God’s Son, and

that after he was crucified, God raised him from the dead. No claim could have

been more outrageous in the Roman world, or the Jewish world.

People in the Roman Empire could easily imagine that great men like the emperor,

Caesar Augustus, were divine. Caesar was often called a god or the Son of God.

That made some sense because Caesar wielded godlike power over vast territory,

and his career seemed a string of godlike triumphs. But that the son of God would

be one of those unfortunate people humiliated and nailed to a cross—that seemed

like a sick joke.

As you came to church on this beautiful late summer day, I suspect that crucifixion

was not what you were hoping to hear more about. And after all, we are a long way

from Good Friday.

But this little background helps us understand why Peter objects so strenuously

when Jesus talks about taking up the cross. And when Jesus predicts that he will

suffer and be killed in Jerusalem, it’s no wonder that Peter exclaims, “God forbid

it! This must never happen to you.” He means: Not you, of all people. The messiah

of God, crucified? God’s chosen one, crucified? What kind of sick joke is this?

Peter was scandalized. And the scandal of the cross of Christ never quite goes

away, no matter how many times we hear about it.

But over the years, as Christians have pondered the passion of Christ, the meaning

of the cross has seeped into people’s hearts and minds and created a new

perception of how and where God may be at work. Even those who don’t think of

themselves as Christians have been shaped by this Christian story.

If God’s own Son was rejected and crucified, and then raised from the dead, then

maybe the weak, the rejected, and the humiliated of the world are not despised by

God, as was commonly thought. Maybe victims are innocent. Maybe they are

people close to God’s heart.

After the cross of Christ, we can never get it out of our heads that the powers of

this world may get things terribly wrong. In God’s kingdom, Jesus said, the last

will be first and the first will be last. And Jesus lives out this truth in his life. By

his death and resurrection, Christ turns upside down our thinking about who are the

winners and who are the losers.

Jesus calls us to follow him in his upside-down life. He calls us to align ourselves

with him and with all those who suffer rejection and humiliation. Jesus asks us to

pick up a piece of his cross and bear some suffering or rejection for Jesus’ sake.

Take up your cross, Jesus says. You don’t have to go looking for a cross to take up.

Jesus himself does not go looking for a cross. But he accepted the cross when that

was necessary to be faithful.

You don’t have to go looking for a cross; the cross will find you—it will find you

in the workplace, or in marriage, or in your family, or in your community. Or even

at church.

That story is at the heart of Claire Keegan’s recent book Small Things Like These.

She tells the story of Bill Furlong, a man who delivers coal to his neighbors in a

small town in Ireland. Bill is a hard worker, and he is devoted to his wife and five

daughters.

One of his regular customers is the local convent of Catholic sisters who run a

program for unmarried mothers, most of them poor. The girls were seen as an

embarrassment by their families and were quietly placed with the sisters. On his

visits to the convent, Bill gets glimpses of how harshly these girls are treated; they

are basically held prisoner, cut off from family and the outside world. Their babies

are taken away from them—and where the babies are sent, the girls are never told.

Thousands of Irish girls were in fact treated this way in a network of church-run

programs known as the Magdalene Laundries.

On one of Bill’s visits to the convent, he passes some girls scrubbing the floors.

One girl grabs him and asks him to take her away. “At least take me as far as the

river,” she says. “All I want to do is drown myself. Can’t you do even that much?”

Bill moves past her, but he can’t get her words out of his mind.

On his next delivery of coal to the convent, he opens the coal shed and discovers a

young girl locked inside. She is barefoot and shivering from the December cold.

He gives her his jacket and leads her to the convent and knocks on the door.

They are greeted by the Mother Superior, who ushers Bill and the shivering girl

inside and serves them tea. The Mother Superior acts kindly, but she shrewdly

pressures the girl to say she must have been accidentally left behind in the coal

shed after a game of hide-and-seek. Bill doesn’t buy that explanation, but he says

nothing. As Bill prepares to leave, the Mother Superior hands him an envelope. It’s

a generous Christmas bonus. Bill knows it is meant to ensure his silence about

what he has seen.

While he goes about his day, Bill can’t stop thinking about what is going in the

convent. Bill’s wife and others in town tell him to mind his own business. Nothing

good can come from opposing the convent, they tell him. The sisters have a lot of

power, and they are backed by the forces of the church and the state and public

opinion. Bill’s wife and friends remind him that the nuns can deny his daughters a

place in the local Catholic school if he gets on their wrong side.

But Bill is nagged by a question: What if those were his daughters? “Was there any

point in being alive [he wonders] without helping one another? Was it possible to

carry through all the years . . . without once being brave enough to go against [the

powers of the world] and yet call yourself a Christian?”

That evening he goes to the convent, opens the door of the coal shed, and discovers

that the same girl has again been locked inside, barefoot and thinly dressed against

the cold. He puts his coat around her and leads her outside, and this time they walk

toward Bill’s home. He intends to make her part of his family, though he knows it

won’t be easy. His wife and his neighbors won’t be happy about this.

He knew the worst was ahead of him. But in another way the worst was behind

him—for how much worse it would have been for him to have done nothing, and

to have gained the world but lost his soul.

As Bill walks with the girl toward home, Keegan writes, he felt a kind of lightness;

he felt an “unrecognizable joy” and peace. He felt like the best part of himself was

emerging.

Jesus says that by giving our live away for the sake of the gospel we will find our

lives. The cross of Christ is God’s gift to us, so that we can find in this troubled

world a different kind of peace than the world gives. God promises to meet us at

the crosses that find us, and to fill our lives with his presence—with grace and

peace, and an unrecognizable joy. Today God is sending us the Holy Spirit to bring

out the best part of ourselves, through Christ our Lord.

Revolution of Morality

I saw Christopher Nolan’s film version of The Odyssey— it’s three hours long, but the time goes by quickly! If you’ve never read Homer’s epic poem (as I hadn’t), the movie conveys some of the scope and power of this great story..

Matt Damon plays the main character, Odysseus, as a soulful warrior. As the story unfolds, Odysseus mourns the countless deaths he has caused in battle and regrets the duplicity of his famous military trick—hiding soldiers inside a wooden horse in order to defeat the Trojans and destroy the city of Troy. An ingenious and brave leader, Damon’s Odysseus also broods over the “law of Zeus,” which commands respect for all human beings, something Odysseus knows he has failed to do.

As several commentators have pointed out, this version of Odysseus departs from Homer and the classical traditions of Greece and edges toward a Biblical vision. Nolan, the director, might well have felt he needed to make this revision so that modern viewers could identify with Odysseus.

The ancient world would have had few of the scruples expressed by Odysseus in the film. Ancient Greek and Roman societies celebrated the warrior virtues—strength, valor, honor, and the glory of military triumph. They assumed that the strong dominate the weak, and that the weak serve the strong. As one ancient historian put it, “The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.” That’s just how the world works.

Leaders of the ancient world would have agreed with the presidential adviser who recently explained US policy to a CNN reporter: “We live in a world . . . that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power. These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.”

It took a revolution in morality for an alternative worldview to emerge. Living on the other side of that revolution, we tend to assume that the exercise of power must be judged by moral norms of justice. We seek to listen to the voice of victims and we regard compassion for those who suffer as the essence of morality.

To the extent we share those views, it is because we are shaped by centuries of Christians preaching, teaching, and meditating on the Gospel stories, which turned the world upside down with teachings like “Love your enemies” and “The last will be first and the first will be last.”

The beginnings of this revolution can be traced to this week’s Gospel reading, in which Jesus discloses that he, the very Son of God, will become one of the least in the world. He “must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised.” God’s Son will himself become a victim of those in power before he is raised in glory. This was an outrageous idea to the ancient mind.

The belief that the Son of God suffered for the truth, and that those in power can be massively wrong, has transformed the way the world thinks about what power is for, and whose side God might be on.

We are excited to welcome children and families to another wonderful program year at Ascension! Whether your family has been part of our congregation for years or you are visiting for the first time, there is a place for your children to learn, worship, make music, build friendships, and grow in faith.

Our children and youth ministries include Godly Play, Godly Play+, Children’s Music, First Communion, and Confirmation. We’ll share more information about First Communion, Confirmation, and other special activities throughout the year.

We’re Back September 13!

Our regular Sunday morning children’s programming returns Sunday, September 13:

9:30 a.m. — Children’s Music
10:00 a.m. — Godly Play for children age 3 through grade 3
10:00 a.m. — Godly Play+ for children in grades 4–6

Godly Play & Godly Play+

Godly Play is a creative, Montessori-inspired approach to Christian faith formation that invites children to explore Bible stories, wonder together, ask questions, and discover the language of our faith. We welcome children aged 3-3 ^rd grade.

Godly Play+ continues that journey for older elementary children in grades 4–6, offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore faith, Scripture, worship, and what it means to live as people of God.

Both groups meet at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

Throughout the year, our children will also be invited to participate more fully in worship. They will have opportunities to serve as readers and to work alongside our ushers in gathering and presenting the offering.

Sundays Without Godly Play

Godly Play and Godly Play+ will take a break on several holiday weekends during the program year:

December 20 & 27 — Christmas break

Additional special Godly Play activities and events will be announced throughout the year.

Children’s Music

Children’s Music meets with Minkyoo at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. Children will learn and make music together and will have opportunities to sing during worship throughout the program year.

Our children will also take part in special seasonal celebrations, including our Christmas Program on December 5. Special rehearsals will be scheduled in the weeks leading up to the program.

A Word from the Pastor

The word sacrifice is one of those words which doesn’t exactly gladden our hearts. Though we know it is necessary to make sacrifices in life, we don’t relish them. Perhaps, at best, s acrifice conjures up the realistic wisdom of “No pain, no gain.”

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for sacrifice originally had the meaning of “draw near” and “be vulnerable.” Those associations begin to make sense if we consider that when, say, a parent willingly makes sacrifices for the sake of a child, or a person offers to do something for another, it’s a way of one person drawing near to the other person and sharing life with them. Sacrifice of this kind does make us vulnerable; it takes something out of us.

This “drawing near” also makes sense if we think about Jesus Christ as God’s sacrifice for us. What is God doing in Jesus but drawing near to us in flesh and blood. God offers himself in Jesus so that we might share more deeply in God’s life.

In this week’s Epistle, Paul urges Christians in Rome to respond to what God has done in Christ by “presenting your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). A “living sacrifice” is not a detached spiritual exercise for which we hope to get credit on some heavenly balance sheet. Rather, as Paul describes, it’s turning all of life into a form of worship, responding to God’s mercy and grace by showing mercy and grace to others.

Eugene Peterson, a Bible scholar who wrote a contemporary version of the Bible called The Message, defines a sacrifice as a “readiness to interrupt whatever we are doing and build an altar, bind whatever we happen to be carrying with us at the moment, place it on the altar, and see what God wills to do with it.” Sacrifice is a way of orienting everyday life.

In that vein, Peterson in The Message rewrites Paul’s words to the Romans in verse 12:1 this way: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.”

Making A World of Difference

THE nations of the world came to America this summer in the form of the World Cup soccer tournament. The national teams of 48 countries competed to see which nation is the best at the sport the rest of the world calls football. I’m only a casual soccer fan but even I could see that the soccer was brilliant. And I think I finally figured out what offsides is in soccer.

What really go my attention happened outside the soccer field. It was the enthusiastic and warm welcome that many Americans gave to these foreign teams and their fans. In Lawrence, Kansas, for example, where the team from Algeria was headquartered, the University of Kansas band learned to play the Algerian national anthem. Citizens of Lawrence adopted the team as their own and distributed scarves with Algeria’s colors. The Algerian players were reportedly moved to tears by this welcome. The Algerian players responded by organizing soccer clinics for local youth. Back in Algeria, the government of that mostly Muslim country decided to create a sister city relationship with Kansas City.

There were a lot of feel-good stories like this throughout the tournament. Which came as something of a surprise given the political mood of our country and our nation’s current relationship with the rest of the globe. As a soccer fan from Scotland put it, “We were expecting to be met by ICE agents, aggressive police, and the political climate we all see on the news, and that could not be further from the truth of what we've actually experienced.”

These are small gestures of hospitality, to be sure, but significant, for they give us a glimpse of that day envisioned by the prophet Isaiah when people of all nations will gather on God’s holy mountain and find unity in praising God together and living in a way that is a blessing to one another.

In our Gospel reading today, we see that vision of Isaiah lived out by Jesus, as he reaches across boundaries of language, culture, and religion to bring healing to the daughter of a Canaanite woman.

But let’s face it, this story of Jesus meeting a Canaanite woman is not exactly a feel-good story. It turns out to be rather more complicated than that, as maybe encounters with differences usually are if we dig into them.

Jesus is not all that warm and welcoming, at least not at first. He tells the woman that healing a foreigner is not at the top of his agenda. “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” he says, and adds what sounds to our ears like an insult: “It’s not fair to give the food meant for the children to the dogs.”

Amazingly, the woman is not put off by Jesus’ comment. She seems to accept the fact that she is not the primary target of Jesus’ ministry. Her faith is resilient, however. She still has faith that there is enough of God’s power and mercy in Jesus for him to heal her daughter. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs from their master’s table,” she says.

We can’t help wishing that Jesus had healed this woman’s daughter straight away. We can’t help wishing he had been more sensitive. But before we send Jesus off to a workshop on diversity, equity, and inclusion, we might remember that Jesus often challenged people and was not always quick to solve their problems. Jesus tends to ask awkward questions and tell provocative stories; he assumes people can be resilient, for his intention is to lead people to a deeper relationship with God.

In his conversation with the Canaanite woman, Jesus names the elephant in the room, that is, he names the awkward truth, which is that there is a real difference between the Canaanites and the people of Israel and it is not trivial. The awkward truth is that Jesus’ entire ministry grows out of a very specific tradition that we call Judaism. Jesus does not try to hide this fact or pretend that such differences don’t matter at all.

Perhaps we can take a lesson here for our own encounters with people of a different culture, religion, or political worldview. Perhaps we can learn to be resilient.

In our nation we live in a time of huge political differences. The differences are often the elephant in the room at family gatherings. One approach we can take is to avoid talking about these differences. But that is hard to do and doesn’t always feel genuine. Another approach is to try to argue the other person into adopting our point of view—but that hardly ever turns out well. Few of us are ever argued out of our positions.

There is another approach, and maybe a more Jesus-like approach: we can use the occasion to deepen the relationship. We can acknowledge differences and be curious about how the other person came to have the convictions they do and why they care about certain issues. And we might describe how we have come to hold the positions we hold. The goal of such a conversation would be to reveal something of ourselves and learn about the other, and to name what we long for, and the healing we hope for. That might bring us closer and point us toward the God who is bigger than our differences. Such conversations call for resilience. And a hope in a God who is bigger than our differences.

Before we send Jesus to the diversity workshop we might also reflect on where we find ourselves in this story. Are we one of the disciples advising Jesus on how to conduct his ministry? Or are we closer to the Canaanite woman, desperate for healing, and knowing perfectly well that in a world of so much suffering we have no particular claim on God’s healing power, but we trust there is enough mercy and grace in Jesus Christ for us. A crumb from the table is all we need. That is what faith looks like, according to Jesus.

And when we trust that there is enough of God’s healing and mercy for us, we are able to believe there is healing and mercy for those who are different from us.

Some years ago, a Catholic priest named Gregory Boyle was assigned to a neighborhood of Los Angeles ravaged by gang violence. The world of gangs was vastly different from anything he had known. Part of him wanted to preach to these young men and women about the bad choices they were making. Part of him wanted to argue with them and convince them that they were headed toward either prison or a violent end.

But after a while he realized that these men and women who belonged to gangs knew those facts better than anyone else. They knew that their lives were headed nowhere good. They knew they had no claim on God; in fact they were pretty sure God had no blessings for them. What they needed, Father Boyle decided, was a sign that there were crumbs of God’s mercy and grace left over for them.

Father Boyle went on to create an organization called Homeboy Industries which offers jobs, job training, and counseling to former gang members. Boyle wanted to make God’s mercy tangible. And through these signs of God’s love, faith and hope have been awakened in these men and women. Which leads to their healing.

Boyle tells the story of a man named Andre, who had been abandoned by his mother when he was 9 and was homeless for two years and survived on food that he scavenged from dumpsters. Eventually he ended up a gang and then in prison. Finally, coming out of prison, he made it to Homeboy Industries.

One Monday morning, Andre had an appointment with his job counselor. The counselor knew Andre was always hungry and that he liked Triscuits, so she brought him a box of Triscuits. “You bought these Triscuits for me?” Andre asked in disbelief. The counselor nodded Yes. “You mean, you thought about me over the weekend?” Andre asked. The counselor said, “Yeah, I thought about you.”

“You mean, you think about me when I’m not with you?” Andre said. “Wow. I never imagined anybody would think about me when I’m not with them.”

Andre was learning to see himself as someone worth thinking about. He was beginning to trust that there was enough of God’s love and mercy also for him.

Through Jesus Christ, God is making a new world out of a world of differences. It is not always a feel-good process. In Jesus Christ our differences are not erased but they become occasions for our horizons to be expanded and our hearts to lifted so we may reconciled with God and one another and learn to be a blessing to one another.

Because there is enough of God’s healing and mercy for us, we can show grace to others. And God is sending us the Holy Spirit that we might make a holy world of difference, through Christ our Lord.

In-Between Time

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am looking forward to serving as interim minister at Ascension and to getting to know all of you in the weeks ahead.

I know something about the ministries that go on at Ascension, having talked with congregational leaders and read the church’s annual report and Ministry Site Profile. But it’s you who give life and breath to this ministry by bringing to it your unique gifts and stories of faith. I look forward to hearing some of those stories and to sharing this ministry with you in the months ahead, trusting that God is with us in this “in-between” time.

This week’s reading from Isaiah (56:1-6-8) comes from an important in-between time in the life of Israel—the time between the destruction of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the city. The Judeans who had been in exile have returned home to find foreigners are part of the community. Jerusalem has become a mix of cultures and religions. Those once regarded as “outcasts” are among those keeping sabbath and living by the commandments. Amidst the uncertainty of a rebuilding project, the scope of Israel’s mission is expanding to include previously excluded groups and “all peoples.”

In his letter to the Romans (11:1-2, 29-32), Paul wrestles with what has been over the centuries one of the most painful “between the times” issues for Christians: our relationship with the Jewish people. How can it be, Paul wonders, that God’s own people—his own people!—have not embraced Jesus Christ as the Messiah of God?

Just as family quarrels are often the most intense, the relationship between Christians and Jews has often been bitter, and Christians have frequently engaged in unspeakable acts of violence and discrimination against Jews, deeds which laid some of the foundation for the anti-Semitism that still infects our own time.

Paul’s conclusion is therefore crucial to hold on to: “the gifts and the calling of God [to the Jewish people] are irrevocable.” God’s covenant with the Jews remains intact. Therefore, until the climax of human history, Jews and Christians remain siblings in faith. We journey alongside one another, called by God to respect and understand our differences and to appreciate the distinct ways our siblings seek to serve God. As we learn to do that, we will be better able to converse with all those who differ in faith and culture.

Reclaimed Timber (from Chicago music collective Beyond This Point) is a 60-minute immersive multimedia music performance played entirely on 6 slats of wood by 6 percussionists. The 6 slats of wood which serve as the "instruments" are amplified with microphones to fill the space with sound, revealing unexpected harmonies and melodies hidden in the vibrations of the wood. Reclaimed Timber also includes a custom-designed reactive lighting installation made of 5000+ LEDs and 200+ paper lanterns, which respond in real time to the sounds of the wood instruments, and visually reflect the musical structure.

David Heim is former editor of the Christian Century magazine. (For a flavor of the magazine and some of his contributions, see the publications link below.. He has served ELCA congregations in Rolling Meadows and Palatine and has been interim pastor in Park Ridge, Naperville, and Oak Park. He is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

He grew up in Vermont and was a reporter for his hometown newspaper before going to seminary. He lives in Oak Park with his wife, Barbara Hofmaier, who is an editor and coordinator of a local GriefShare program. They have a son who is an ELCA pastor.

Pastor David is part of a Lutheran-Jewish dialogue group in Chicago and was a member of the Christian Leadership Initiative at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem in 2016–17.

He likes history, fiction, travel, and sports.

On Sunday, September 13, following a short coffee hour, Ascension will join thousands of ELCA congregations across the country for God's Work. Our Hands.—the ELCA's annual day of service.

This year, we're inviting everyone to help us pack love into four different Kindness Kits that will bless our neighbors through four of our local pantry partners:

What to Expect at Ascension

Imagine being invited by a neighbor to an event at their mosque.

They simply say, "Please come. It starts at 4. There will be food and prayers."

It's a kind invitation, but if you've never visited a mosque before, you might suddenly find yourself with a long list of questions.

Will it really start at 4, or is that just the gathering time? Should you cover your hair? Take off your shoes? Will women and men pray together? What kind of food will be served? How long will the event last? Will it all be in English? Is there an offering? Where do you even go once you arrive?

For members of that faith community, those questions probably never occur to them. But for a first-time visitor, they can feel like a lot of unknowns.

The same is often true when visiting a church for the first time. Those of us who worship here every week can easily forget that many of the things we take for granted—where to park, what to wear, when to stand or sit, whether children are welcome, or what happens during communion—may be complete mysteries to someone walking through our doors for the first time.

So, if you're considering visiting Ascension, we'd love to answer some of those questions before you arrive.

Who Are We?

Ascension is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are Christians rooted in the Lutheran tradition and committed to growing in faith, serving our neighbors, and welcoming all people. If you'd like to learn more about the ELCA, including our beliefs, our understanding of Scripture, and our ecumenical, interfaith, and social commitments, visit www.elca.org/faith .

What is Worship Like?

We worship together every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Worship begins promptly at 10:00, although people continue arriving during the first several minutes. The service typically lasts about one hour.

Our worship follows a traditional Lutheran liturgy while incorporating local creativity and a variety of musical styles. You'll hear everything from beloved hymns to newer songs, accompanied by piano, organ, guitar, drums, cantors, instrumentalists, and choir. We love to sing, and we hope you'll join us.

We celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday using gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic wine. Everyone is welcome at Christ's table. If you choose not to receive communion, that's perfectly okay too—no one will question or pressure you.

We also baptize people of all ages, including infants. If you'd like to learn more about Baptism or Holy Communion, we'd be happy to visit with you.

Where Do I Go?

Our building is fully accessible, and our large parking lot includes designated accessible parking spaces.

Although our building has many entrances, the one you'll use on Sundays and throughout the week is the main entrance . Look for the large glass doors beneath the white triangular awning facing Sunset Ridge Road.

If you're visiting for the first time, don't worry—we'll be happy to help you find your way.

What Should I Wear?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Some people wear jeans and polo shirts. Others wear dresses or suits. One of our youngest members faithfully wears a tutu nearly every week, while one of our high school students often arrives in his soccer uniform.

There is no dress code here. Come as you are.

During worship, pastors wear traditional vestments, and worship assistants wear albs, but you'll see every style of clothing represented in the pews.

Can I Bring My Children?

Absolutely!

Children are an important part of our worshipping community and are welcome in every aspect of our life together.

Activity bags are available in the sanctuary for children who remain with their families. We also offer a staffed nursery for infants through age three and Godly Play for children ages three through third grade.

Godly Play begins with Singing Time at 9:30 a.m. , followed by class at 10:00 a.m. Children return to the sanctuary each week to receive Holy Communion with the congregation.

Am I Expected to Give?

Our ministry is made possible through the generosity of our members and friends, many of whom give online.

During worship, an offering plate is passed, but if you're visiting, please don't feel any obligation to give. Your presence is truly the greatest gift, and we're simply glad you're here.

Is There Coffee?

Yes!

After worship, everyone is invited to stay for coffee, cold beverages, and a sweet treat. Some of the best conversations happen during this time, and we'd love the chance to get to know you.

What About Health and Safety?

Masks are no longer required, and we no longer practice strict physical distancing. However, some people still choose to wear a mask or sit a little farther apart.

We encourage everyone to do whatever helps them feel comfortable and safe.

Worship in the Park Brings Four Congregations Together

What a wonderful Sunday morning! Nearly 100 people from four Willow Road congregations gathered at Clarkson Park for our annual community worship service. Together with friends from Northfield Community Church, Winnetka Presbyterian Church, and The Episcopal Church of St. James the Less, we worshipped outdoors in God's beautiful creation.

The cloudy skies provided perfect weather—keeping the morning comfortable and making it easy to enjoy fellowship before and after the service. Guests were welcomed with delicious homemade baked treats, cold water, and lemonade, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone. One especially joyful moment came as we sang This Little Light of Mine and watched neighbors stroll through the park, riding bicycles and smiling as they passed by. It was a beautiful reminder that worship doesn't just happen inside church walls—it shines out into the community around us.

One of the greatest joys of this annual tradition is the opportunity to worship alongside our Christian neighbors. It's always meaningful to learn about the traditions and practices of other denominations while celebrating the faith that unites us. Events like these strengthen our sense of community, build lasting friendships, and remind us that we are stronger when we come together in worship and service.

Thank you to everyone who helped organize this special morning and to all who joined us. We are already looking forward to gathering together again next year!

The Call Process

An End and a Beginning

Pastor JoAnn Post's retirement from Ascension and from active ministry (May 31) is both an end and a beginning for the congregation. Pastor Post came to Ascension in the fall of 2014, and has been part of more than a decade of energy and purpose, redefining the congregation's goals and priorities, while tending faithfully to the various communities in its care.

Pastor Post is retiring after 41 years of ordained ministry, deeply sad to leave the work and people she loves, but eager to greet the next chapter in her life. The congregation received news of her retirement with both grief and gratitude. As the Ministry Site Profile for the call process reports, "While no one is eager for the disruption and loss that the current pastoral transition represents, in a distinctively Ascension fashion, its leaders have come to regard it as an opportunity for renewal and redirection. The congregation is excited to release their beloved pastor with God's blessings, and then consider how to welcome a successor with new gifts and ideas."

A call committee of eight members will oversee the call process. In the meantime, between Pastor Post's departure and the arrival of the next pastor, the congregation will be served by both supply and interim pastors. Staff members are remaining in their roles, to guide and steady the congregation in this time of transition.

Trinity Sunday and A Fond Farewell

On Sunday, May 31, Ascension gathers to celebrate both Trinity Sunday and Pastor JoAnn Post's last Sunday before retiring. Worship at 10 a.m. will include a sung/spoken reading of the Creation Story, in which God creates all things with a word and in multiple persons: "Let us create." Pastor Post will preach and preside. At the end of the liturgy Pastor Kathy Nolte, Associate to the Bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod (ELCA), will lead the Rite of Farewell. Worship will close with a thunderous singing of "Holy, Holy, Holy," a fitting last word for the day. Following worship, Ascension will host a Festive Coffee Hour in Pastor Post's honor, which will include the giving of gifts and good wishes.

Come, Lord Jesus

We open each Sunday of the season with the lighting of Advent Candles by our children. Our hymns are both plaintive and hopeful, looking forward to that day when Christ will come again in glory. In this, the darkest time of year, our scripture texts lean into repentance--the need to turn our lives around, turn our hearts around, open our eyes--to God's work in the world. Even, especially, when it is hard to see.

Also, each Advent, we challenge ourselves to care more deeply for our neighbors. This Advent, our Advent Tree will invite shoppers to buy necessary items for our ministry partner, the Northfield Township Food Pantry: pet food, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, cereal. We encourage financial gifts for A Just Harvest, as they build a neighborhood cafe that will both teach cooking and restaurant skills, and provide a safe, nurturing place for its neighbors. Our children will host a Cookie Walk and collect quarters. We will hear from other ministry partners about their work to feed the hungry.

Away in a Manger

We offer two worship opportunities on Christmas Eve. At 4 p.m., we highlight our children and families with a simple liturgy and a pick-up pageant. At 7 p.m. we ponder the mystery of the Christ Child, God laid in our arms. Both services will include carols, communion and candles.

A Community Christmas

The First Sunday of Christmas is spent in the company of our neighbors, the Willow Road Congregations. Please join us on Sunday, December 28, 10 a.m. at Northfield Community Church, 400 Wagner Road, Northfield. Along with St. James the Less Episcopal Congregation we will gather around Lessons and Carols to greet the Christ Child. A reception will follow.

Always Reforming

Our Lutheran roots lie in the theological and cultural revolution of the 16th century that we have named "Reformation." We follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther and other reformers across the centuries, seeking to be more faith-full to scripture, more grace-full in the world, and more obedient to God's ways. We will mark the Reformation at Ascension on Reformation Sunday, October 26 at 10 a.m. with a special worship opportunity, followed by a German-themed Coffee Hour.

Our liturgy will follow the pattern of Luther's Die Deutsche Messe (The German Mass), using both ancient texts and contemporary translations. Worship will open with an extended organ/piano/lute prelude of music from the period, including some favorite Bach preludes. During worship we will sing our way through the great hymns of the Reformation, interspersed with teaching about the way those tunes and texts inspired a movement. The frosting on our Reformation cake will be a thundering organ/piano rendition of "Ein Feste Burg" ("A Mighty Fortress.) If you like to sing or learn or think, you'll want to join us for our Festival of the Reformation.

After worship we will gather around frothy mugs of (root) beer, and piles of pretzels for dipping.

We are always being reformed, reshaped, revived for service to the world God's love. Join us. Bring a friend. Prost!

Our Beautiful Celebration of Life Garden

Celebration of Life Garden Expansion Dedication

Ascension's Celebration of Life Garden was dedicated on All Saints Day 1998. In the intervening years, dozens of families have laid their loved ones to rest in the Garden, knowing their memory will be respected and the grounds cared for in perpetuity. Late last year, the Garden trustees realized the Garden was nearing capacity, and that, in order, to continue to provide a beautiful and respectful resting place for our members, the Garden would need to be expanded.

In cooperation with the congregation's leadership and the Village of Northbrook, the trustees oversaw the addition of two walls, Wisdom and Trust, which provide 104 additional interment spaces. We will gather to dedicate these new walls on Sunday, October 19, at 9:30 a.m. We will gather in the Garden to give thanks for those who have gone before us, and set this space apart for God's praise and honor and to comfort those who grieve.

May God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless those interred in this Garden, who share in God's eternal presence. May we know God's comfort, peace and the certain hope of resurrection and heavenly reunion with those who have finished their heavenly journey.

Following the dedication, we will move to the sanctuary for worship at 10 a.m.

On All Saints Sunday, we will gather first in the Celebration of Life Garden at 9 a.m. to remember, with thanksgiving, loved ones interred there.

At 10 a.m., we will move to the sanctuary for worship with Holy Communion. During our prayers, we will name all the names recorded in our Book of Remembrance.

Godly Play Starting Soon!

Children are welcome and integral in all parts of our life together. We invite your children to join in the fun and learning.

Each Sunday, Godly Play children gather at 9:30 a.m. for Singing Time and then move to the Godly Play classroom at 10 a.m.

Godly Play is a Montessori method for Christian education. The method has been utilized in churches around the world. In Godly Play, children get to make meaning through story, wonder, and play. It's a way of nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.

We offer Godly Play for children age 3 through 3rd grade and Godly Play+ for children in grades 4-6.

Following their classroom time, the children join the congregation in the sanctuary for communion each week. You can learn about Godly Play at www.godlyplayfoundation.org.

Because we believe that God's Work is often accomplished by Our Hands, Ascension will be joining ELCA congregations across the country in a local God's Work Our Hands project. Along with four other Lutheran congregations, known as the Glenbrook Parish, we will offer two service opportunities on Saturday, September 6.

The Watersmeet Restoration—Northfield

We have only 20 spots available to us for this forest preserve stewardship day. Volunteers must be at least high-school age. The work is physical and outside. Please dress appropriate for the weather.

Feed My Starving Children—Libertyville

We have many volunteer spots available for this food packing day. Volunteers must be at least 5-years of age. There will be tasks for all abilities and the work is inside. Financial contributions are encouraged to support the work of Feed My Starving Children.

Financial contributions may be made to Ascension by check (memo GWOH). If you would like to give electronically, please contact the church office.

Last year we welcomed over 100 volunteers for God's Work Our Hands. You will want to be part of this hands-on, mission-focused, life-changing project.

Join Us for Christmas Eve!

In this season of familiar songs and stories, a new hymn catches our ear:

For the poor in heart, Jesus comes to earth.

For each homeless infant born, for the week and those who mourn,

for the weary and the worn, Jesus comes.

Here is another familiar thing—the tension between the ways of God and the ways of the world. Many powerful forces colluded against God’s plan—Emperor Augustus ordered a census, King Herod tried to take the child's life. And yet, God’s purposes were accomplished—the Holy Child was born in a borrowed barn; he grew to full stature as Son of Mary and Son of God. We who celebrate that holy birth under unlikely circumstances, continue to pursue God’s ways in the world. As this new hymn sings, “for the weary and the worn, Jesus comes.”

A Challenge for Advent

Each Advent, we engage one of our primary ministry partners in providing tangible and financial support for their work.

This Advent, we are partnering with The Night Ministry, in support of their Pathways Transitional Living Program. As is our practice, we offer opportunities to Advocate, Education and Participate with partners whose work multiplies our own.

Advocate

The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization whose mission is to provide human connection, housing support, and health care to those who are unhoused or experiencing poverty. With an open heart, they compassionately accept each individual as they are and work alongside them to advocate for their immediate physical,

emotional, and social needs while affirming our shared humanity.

At Ascension, when we see need or opportunity, we engage it. To receive regular news and information about The Night Ministry, sign-up for their e-newsletter at thenightministry.org.

Educate

We offer two learning opportunities with this Advent Challenge. On Sunday, November 24, The Night Ministry CEO and President Carol J. Sharp will join us for worship and for coffee hour. She will describe the mission of The Night Ministry and launch the Advent Challenge.

On Sunday, December 1, Kristen Schneider, The Night Ministry Vice President of Finance and Operations, will describe the Advent Challenge in greater detail and invite your participation.

We offer three ways to provide tangible support for the Pathways program:

Gift Tags

The Advent Tree will be festooned with gift tags for specific items which you may purchase and deliver to Ascension during Advent.

The Big Ask—(with a Big Reach)

We are challenging ourselves to provide receive financial gifts totaling $10,000 to meet the following needs for Pathways participants:

Life Skill Courses

Pathways participants who have experienced homelessness will learn how to manage a home with skills including financial management, housekeeping and cleaning, and meal preparation.

Drivers Training Courses

Learning to drive is crucial skill for young people who desire to live independently. Drivers training courses are expensive, beyond the reach of Pathways participants.

Wish List

As Pathways participants learn life skills, such as cooking, small appliances like microwaves and air fryers are deeply desired, but are unaffordable.

Supply Closet

Young people new to caring for a home often forget to purchase ongoing cleaning and laundry supplies. The Supply Closet will provide paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and other items they will need on an ongoing basis.

Join Us for the Coming of Advent

In our own troubled lives, we find ourselves in one strange and dreadful strife or another every day. Advent is a season in which we explore the rich diversity of human existence and response in the face of circumstances not easily resolved. Rather than focusing solely on the manger, we will look beyond Bethlehem to the promise of new life in Christ now and always.

First Sunday of Advent: The Coming Days

Advent is about the “coming days.” God’s people have always lived in great expectation. The ancients anticipated a “righteous Branch to spring up for David.” The Thessalonians awaited “the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints.” Jesus’ contemporaries hoped for the time “to stand before the Son of Man.” With them we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of Christ in word and supper.

Second Sunday of Advent: The Coming Message

Forerunners and messengers advance the advent of our God. While John the baptizer’s voice in the wilderness may be the principal focus of the day, Malachi’s prophecy could as easily herald the coming Christ as forerunner of the Lord of hosts. Finally, all the baptized are called to participate in the sharing of the gospel. In so doing we prepare the way for the coming of Jesus and assist all people in capturing a vision of the “salvation of God.”

Third Sunday of Advent: The Coming Power

Christ’s presence in our midst in the wonder of the holy supper is cause for singing. The nearness of the God in prayer, in every circumstance, is cause for rejoicing. The coming of one “more powerful” than John, even with a winnowing fork in hand, is good news—and cause for exultation—for us who are being saved. Great joy is the tone for the third Sunday of Advent.

Fourth Sunday of Advent: The Coming Cradle

Cradle and cross are inextricably connected on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Between a lovely tribute to the little town of Bethlehem and Mary’s magnificent song of praise, the letter to the Hebrews reminds us in no uncertain terms that Christ’s advent is for “the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” It is the kind of tension in which the church always lives.

Each first Sunday of the month—we invite you to bring pantry items which we will deliver to the Food Pantry for you, or make a financial donation to the Pantry. Your financial donation can be made through Ascension on Realm (select "Local Hunger”). If you prefer to make a food donation, items will be collected in the food pantry bin just inside the front door.

Can We Borrow Your Hands?

Because we believe that God's Work is often accomplished by Our Hands, Ascension will be joining ELCA congregations across the country in a local God's Work Our Hands project. Along with three other Northfield township congregations, we will assemble at Ascension Saturday, September 7, 2-4 p.m. to assemble 2000 hygiene kits for our ministry partner, The Night Ministry (TNM).

Last year we assembled 1000 kits. Why this year are we doing 2000? TNM distributes 2,000 hygiene kits at train stations, bus stops, and through their health ministry each month. Because the need is so great, the hygiene kits have been newly-configured to contain fewer essential items, and to be packaged in paper bags rather than plastic, in order to reduce potential waste.

Each congregation is asked to raise funds for its proportional share of the cost (based on average worship attendance at each). Ascension's share of the cost is $2,380. Please plan to make a financial gift to this annual effort. We will NOT be gathering the supplies, but will order them in bulk to save money. And, whether you are able to financially support this task or not, join us for our God's Work Our Hands event Saturday, September 7. We will have tasks for all ages and abilities.

Learning While We Play

Learning While We Play

Our children gather around "Godly Play" each Sunday of the program year for a Bible story, crafts and activities. Godly Play strives to "make meaning through story, wonder and play." Children age 3 - grade 3 engage the Godly Play curriculum with caring, insightful and skilled instructors. In addition to the basic Godly Play curriculum, students in grades 4-6 enjoy Godly Play+. In Godly Play+ they are invited to learn and practice skills of worship leadership: reading, assisting, serving, ushering.

Before the Godly Play hour, our children sing with one of our music directors, learning new and old songs of the faith. They regularly sing in worship.

Please join us for Children's Music at 9:30 a.m., Godly Play and Godly Play+ at 10 a.m. each Sunday of the program year. Children join the congregation in the sanctuary for holy communion.

Come, Holy Spirt!

We will meet as Jesus' disciples met on the first Pentecost millennia ago. Eye witness accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit reported that the believers were amazed and astonished. Wouldn't we be? If "divided tongues as of fire" rested on our heads and our mouths were filled with languages we did not know, we might be amazed and astonished, as well.

Ascension celebrates Pentecost with a red-dressed sanctuary, majestic music, and multi-language readings. This year we will celebrate both Affirmation of Baptism and First Communion for a number of our children and teens. Please join us for the Festival of Pentecost, Sunday, May 19 at 10 a.m. Though we do not expect fire and language, we never know what amazing and astonishing events the Spirit might stir.

Lent Challenge: Seeking Justice for Those Who Have No Home

Habitat for Humanity

Kickoff: February 11, 2024

As part of our year-long Vitality Initiative, "Seeking Justice," during Lent we will partner with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit whose mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

The Lent Challenge will include vitality talks about Habitat, a children's home-building activity, All-Ascension Reads, and the Lent Tree. The Lent Tree will be festooned with ornaments inviting financial contributions to specific Habitat needs, and offering envelopes to contribute directly to a bigger goal.

We are working with Habitat for Humanity (Lake County) to schedule one or more build dates for Ascension volunteers.

Ascension’s Advent Challenge: ELCA Good Gifts

ELCA’s Good Gifts Program is part of ELCA World Hunger, which supports churchwide ministries in 88 countries around the world. Good Gifts include God’s Global Barnyard along with other initiatives, including access to safe water, opportunities for women and children, agriculture programs, global health care, and international emergencies.

We invite your participation in this Advent Challenge in one or more of the following ways.

• Plan to honor family or friends with a Christmas donation/gift in their name to the ELCA Good Gifts project(s) of your choice.

• Choose one or more ornaments representing God’s Global Barnyard or other program(s) from the Advent Tree beginning December 3.

• Put the ornament(s) you choose on your tree at home to remind everyone of your response to worldwide hunger needs.

• From the baskets below the tree, take the greeting card(s) that match your ornaments. Send or give those cards to the people you honor with your donation.

• Add up the gifts you have chosen and make that total donation to Ascension via Realm (Choose “Advent Challenge”) or insert a check made out to Ascension in the envelope provided by the tree.

As part of our Vitality Initiative "Seeking Justice for Refugees and Immigrants," we want to learn more about our own family's migrant journeys.

Please complete our ancestry poll about ONE of your ancestors by October 15. The poll can be found in the weekly eblast or as an insert in Sunday's bulletin. The results will be compiled anonymously.

Please plan to join us for lunch after worship Sunday, October 22. At the luncheon, we will share the results of the poll and tell our ancestor stories to one another. Even if you are unable to attend the luncheon, we ask you to complete the poll.

Please RSVP for the luncheon on our SignUp.com page or contact Office Manager Ami Frick in the church office. Your advance registration is important--we want to make sure we have enough food! Please RSVP no later than October 15. If you wish to help offset the cost of lunch, we suggest a donation of $10.

Blessing of the (Stuffed) Animals

In the name of St. Francis of Assisi

Each fall, congregations give thanks for the example of St. Francis of Assisi, whose both celebrated and protected creation's creatures. It is customary to offer a Blessing of the Animals near his Feast Day, October 4. In years past, we have blessed all sorts of animals in all sorts of ways, but the risk of cat scratch or turtle salmonella or horse droppings have rendered such events problematic. Instead, we invite you to bring your favorite soft animal friend, or a photo of a live animal friend to worship Sunday, October 8. We will celebrate the Blessing of the (Stuffed) Animals during worship.

After the blessing we will sing a new hymn, "Earth is full of wit and wisdom" whose lyrics make us all laugh.

Earth is full of wit and wisdom, sounding God's delighted laugh,

From the tiny roly poly to the tree-top-tall giraffe.

All creation sings in wonder, even rocks and trees rejoice

Vitality Initiative

Compelled by grace and mercy, we seek justice for Refugees and Immigrants

Each year, Ascension takes on a year-long initiative to guide our ministry in the coming program year. Recent initiatives include homelessness, racism, education, and change each encompassing the three components of Educate, Advocate and Participate.

For the months of September and October, we engage in the plight of refugees and immigrants.

Join us on Sunday, September 17 at 9:30 a.m. for the first Vitality Talk in the series, "Setting the Table: Justice for Refugees and Immigrants".

In worship, Pastor will introduce and preach on this year’s initiative and then we’ll sing it! (ACS 1062)

Godly Play Resumes September 10! (And there's something new this year...)

What is Godly Play?

Godly Play is a Sunday School curriculum that focuses on making meaning through story, wonder, and play. Nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.

As Godly Play (for children age 3-grade 3) resumes this year, we will also launch Godly Play+ (for children in grades 4-6).

Each Sunday, we invite children of all ages to come and sing in Children's Music from 9:45 a.m.-10:00 a.m., followed by Godly Play and Godly Play+.

Our children will then join the congregation for Holy Communion.

Our goal with the Godly Play+ children is to equip them for greater involvement in the congregation's life through story, song and service.

Of course, if children in any age group prefer to worship with their parents, they are certainly welcome to do so.

You are invited to read and join in the discussion for any or all of the chosen books. ABC is open to everyone and is commitment free--come once, come just to talk about your favorite books, or come to each book discussion, whatever works for you!

ABC meetings are held mostly at Ascension on the second Tuesday of each month (third Tuesday in October) at 10:30 a.m. The group meets and enjoys refreshments while discussing the book of the month. Meetings usually last until about noon.

This evening presentation will allow adequate time for all to learn about this journey of a lifetime, made with other members of the Metro Chicago Synod. All are welcome. No registration required. We Feed the Hungry

Our congregation has been a trusted partner of A Just Harvest, serving hungry people in the Rogers Park community of Chicago for many decades. We serve a hot lunch to 125 hungry neighbors of A Just Harvest, people who would experience food insecurity without this assistance. Our congregation provides ingredients for the meal and the volunteers to serve it for the third Tuesday of each month. You are invited to take part by:

Picking up preordered, prepaid food and delivering it to A Just Harvest, 7649 N Paulina St, Chicago (on set day).
Donating fruit or cookies, bringing items to church before our serving day.
Serving lunch from noon to 2:00 pm. (Volunteers meet at Ascension Church at 10:30 and travel together to the Kitchen, returning to church by 2:30 p.m.)
Making a financial contribution to support the purchase of food. (Financial contributions may be made using Realm, specifying A Just Harvest, or leaving a check in the church office.)

A note about Easter shoes: Ascension’s front lawn becomes a swimming pool after a heavy rain. If the days continue to be as rainy as they have been, you might want to consider putting your children in rain boots for the Egg Hunt, rather than new patent leather shoes. I’ll warn the Easter Bunny so their paws don’t get muddy.

Seven Last Words, A Cantata for Easter

Singers and instrumentalists from Ascension and St. James the Less Episcopal Church join guest musicians to welcome Holy Week with the cantata Seven Last Words (Septum Ultima Verba), by composer Michael John Trotter, voiced by singers, winds, horns and piano. Based on the set of texts often used during Holy Week to contemplate Jesus' crucifixion, the Seven Last Words are haunting in their simplicity, but complex in the range of emotions they express.

Ascension is honored to host this invitation to Holy Week on Sunday, April 2, 4:30 p.m. No reservations are required. The concert is free and open to the public.

A Community Gathered Around Ashes

Lent Begins with Ash Wednesday--February 22, 2023

We gather with neighbors and community members to begin the season of Lent with

the imposition of ashes on our foreheads. Three Northfield congregations--Ascension Lutheran, Northfield Community and St. James the Less Episcopal--invite you to receive ashes in a drive-by fashion and to worship together in the evening.

Welcome, friend. Our doors and heart s are open.

I was recently invited to an event at the mosque one of my neighbors attends. He said, “Please come. It starts at 4. There will be food and prayers.”

I’m sure that to him, a member of the mosque, that invitation made perfect sense. But to me, who had never attended an event like that in a mosque? I had a million questions. Would the event start promptly at 4 or was that only the gathering time? Should I cover my hair; take off my shoes? Would women and men pray together? What would we eat? How long would the event last? Would they speak English? Would there be an offering? The mosque is a big building—where would I find him?

In fact, when I arrived at the mosque, my fears fled. I was early and over-dressed. I hadn’t budgeted enough time. But, my neighbor and members of the mosque could not have been more welcoming. I still wish I had been better prepared.

I wonder if we at Ascension make assumptions about the questions our guests and visitors might ask, especially if they are not Lutheran Christians who understand our “shorthand.” Here’s what you can expect when you join us for worship at Ascension. (And I hope you

do.)

Affiliation

We are congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Information about our denomination’s faith commitments can be found at www.elca.org/faith . There you can read about our understanding of scripture, our teaching about God, our ecumenical, interfaith and social commitments.

Worship

We are a liturgical church, which means we follow a pattern of worship common to Lutherans, but with local variations. Our music ranges from contemporary to traditional, and includes cantors, ensembles, instrumentalists and congregational singing. We are accompanied by piano, organ, guitar and drums, as appropriate for the music. Our Directors of Music are classically trained and wonderfully creative. We are a singing

congregation, as happy to sing old favorites as to try something new.

We offer a single worship service on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. We begin promptly at 10, but worshippers trickle in for about 15 minutes after that. Worship typically lasts about an hour.

We celebrate Holy Communion each week using gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic wine. All are welcome at the table. Abstaining from the meal is also okay—no one will question or coerce you.

We practice infant baptism, which means that believers of any age are welcome at the font. To learn more about our baptism or communion practice, be in touch.

Facility

Our facility is fully accessible. Our parking lot is large, with clearly marked parking for drivers with disability tags. There are 19 entrances to our building (most of them locked), but on Sunday mornings and during the week we use the front entrance—look for the large glass doors under a white triangle-shaped awning just off the Sunset Ridge entrance.

Attire

Worship attire is as casual or formal as you choose. One of our little girls wears a tutu every week. One of our high school boys often comes in his soccer uniform. Some wear jeans and polo shirts, and some wear suits or dresses. We want you to be comfortable among us. I vest with alb, stole and chasuble; our worship assistants wear albs, as well.

Children

Children are welcome and integral in all parts of our life together. Activity bags are provided in the sanctuary for children who remain with their parents. Children are also welcome in our staffed nursery (infants – 3 years of age) or in the Godly Play classroom (3 years of age – 3rd grade). Godly Play children gather at 9:30 a.m. for Singing Time and then move to the Godly Play classroom at 10 a.m. They join the congregation in the sanctuary for communion each week. Offering

Our ministry is funded primarily by the generosity of our members and friends. Most of our members and friends practice online giving. We are happy to tell you about that, if you are interested. We also pass the offering plate on Sunday. Your financial support is welcome, but not necessary.

Food

We gather for a social time after worship each week. Coffee and cold beverages are served; some sort of sweet or treat is also offered. That time after worship is as holy as is the time we spend in the sanctuary. We hope you will join us for that, as well.

Safety Protocols

Post-pandemic, we no longer require mask-wearing in the building, or practice strict distancing protocols. But some choose to wear a mask or sit apart. We encourage you to do whatever makes you feel safe.

suggestions provided by those in attendance. Food and beverage will be available for

purchase.

This is a terrific opportunity to strengthen our bonds in ministry, to sing favorite hymns

and maybe learn a few new ones. No reservations needed. You are encouraged to bring

friends and neighbors.

What is A Just Harvest?

When in-person daily meal service to hungry people in the Rogers Park community was necessarily suspended during the pandemic, Lutheran Church of the Ascension continued supporting our decades-long ministry partner, A Just Harvest Community Kitchen, by providing food for one meal a month. A Just Harvest used our food donations to prepare take home and home delivered meals for their clients. Missing was the sense of community that develops when people gather at table to share food and fellowship.

In early November, that sense of community was restored! The Kitchen reopened for LUNCH service seven days a week. Following the previous schedule, Ascension will provide food for one meal each month (the third Tuesday of the month). Prior volunteers are eager to return to in-person service and welcome you to join in!

Please consider supporting Ascension's ministry with A Just Harvest by donating needed food items, transporting food items to the facility, assisting on site cooks to prepare and serve the meal. Financial donations are also appreciated! Contact the office to sign up today!

Epiphany: Celebration and Season

Epiphany Day, January 6, found Pastor JoAnn Post on her tiptoes, etching an Epiphany greeting on the wall above the font:

20 + C + M + B + 22. In keeping with an ancient custom to inscribe a welcome for guests and strangers above the home’s entrance, as she wrote, she read:

The magi of old known as Caspar (C) , Melchior (M), and Balthasar (B) followed the star of God’s Son who came to dwell among us two thousand (20) and twenty-three (23) years ago. Christ, bless this house, and remain with us throughout the year.

But Epiphany is more than a day; it is also a season. During the Season of Epiphany, we read scripture texts of Jesus being revealed to the world. Part of what is revealed is the fact that all people, regardless of age or any other defining factor, are welcome in our assembly and can be baptized. The texts for the season identify Jesus as “Lamb of God.” They urge agreement in Christian community. They urge repentance for sins individual and corporate. They remind us of Jesus’ identity and ours.

The Season of Epiphany ends on February 19, with a bookend. On the first Sunday after Epiphany Jesus was named “Son, Beloved” in his baptism. On the last Sunday, Transfiguration Sunday, the voice speaks again.

All Ascension Reads

What? Is that a typo? No, The Nones is the name given to an increasingly significant group of Americans who say they have no religious affiliation – a group growing from just 5% of the population in 1972 to 23.7% in 2018!

As part of our focus on CHANGE this year, our next All Ascension Reads choice is The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going by Ryan P. Burge. In a departure from our usual format, we will discuss one of the five chapters of the book at 9:30 each Sunday February 19 through March 19. Each chapter will be facilitated by a different leader. This format should make it easy to participate!

Copies of the book will be available to borrow from church starting next Sunday or the book can be purchased easily from Amazon. Plan now to discuss chapter one, “What Does the American Religious Landscape Look Like?” at 9:30 on February 19!

“One Tree Many Branches” sprouted on the North Shore over a decade ago, when Lutheran Church of the Ascension Directors of Music Mischa Zupko and Minkyoo Shin were challenged to leverage their tremendous musical gifts to create a performance series that would open Ascension ’s soul to the broader community... through the gift of music and the performing arts.

In 2012, “One Tree Many Branches” became the donor-sustained series that it is today.

The series seeks to deliver performances across the musical spectrum... performances that educate, surprise, challenge, and of course, entertain! The series features a diverse variety of top tier performers from Chicagoland and around the world. You meet the artists in the comfort of our musical living room – the acoustically wonderful sanctuary of Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield, Illinois.

Concerts are held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and are followed by the opportunity to meet the artists in an intimate setting. This series is our gift to the community, and we ’re very grateful to our donors and supporters who make it happen! Join us. Take a seat. Give if you choose.

Advent Challenge: Change the Life of a Child

This Advent , we are partnering with Holy Family School

Each Advent, Ascension takes on a special challenge with one of our ministry partners. This advent we are partnering with Holy Family School to provide financial support for six specific needs they have identified. The Advent Tree in Fellowship Hall will be festooned with gift tags, inviting you to provide financial support toward a specific need. (We will not be buying actual items.). Each tag includes the item name and the exact cost; any amount toward that item is also welcome.

The tags will be for Backpack $50 or any amount, Blazer $75 or any amount, Field Trip $100 or any amount, Chromebook $200 or any amount, Uniform $250 or any amount.

We also present a larger challenge: Holy Family School is in need of desk/chair sets at the cost of $2500 each. We have challenged ourselves to provide 5 desk/chair sets for a total of $12,500. You may use the offering envelopes on the Advent Tree to make a financial gift of any amount toward this goal, or make your gift on Realm.

Our children will participate in the Advent Challenge by hosting a Cookie Walk on Sunday, December 18. All proceeds of the Walk will be gifted to Holy Family School.

The Advent Challenge will end Sunday, December 18.

A smart COOKIE wouldn't miss this!

Don't miss the Holiday Cookie Walk on Sunday, December 18 immediately after worship.

$10 buys you a box to fill with cookies from each cookie station around Fellowship Hall.

Proceeds will support this year's Advent Challenge.

After you visit each cookie station, grab a cup of hot cocoa or coffee and enjoy some sweet treats while the Godly Play kids lead us in some well-known Christmas carols around the tree.

We want your cookies! Donations of cookies are wanted. Please sign up by December 11 via Signup.com and have your donated delights at church by December 18. We are asking for a two dozen minimum. While this is a great time to feature your secret family recipe, store bought cookies will gladly be accepted!
