An End and a Beginning

Pastor JoAnn Post's retirement from Ascension and from active ministry (May 31) is both an end and a beginning for the congregation. Pastor Post came to Ascension in the fall of 2014, and has been part of more than a decade of energy and purpose, redefining the congregation's goals and priorities, while tending faithfully to the various communities in its care.

Pastor Post is retiring after 41 years of ordained ministry, deeply sad to leave the work and people she loves, but eager to greet the next chapter in her life. The congregation received news of her retirement with both grief and gratitude. As the Ministry Site Profile for the call process reports, "While no one is eager for the disruption and loss that the current pastoral transition represents, in a distinctively Ascension fashion, its leaders have come to regard it as an opportunity for renewal and redirection. The congregation is excited to release their beloved pastor with God's blessings, and then consider how to welcome a successor with new gifts and ideas."

A call committee of eight members will oversee the call process. In the meantime, between Pastor Post's departure and the arrival of the next pastor, the congregation will be served by both supply and interim pastors. Staff members are remaining in their roles, to guide and steady the congregation in this time of transition.

Trinity Sunday and A Fond Farewell

On Sunday, May 31, Ascension gathers to celebrate both Trinity Sunday and Pastor JoAnn Post's last Sunday before retiring. Worship at 10 a.m. will include a sung/spoken reading of the Creation Story, in which God creates all things with a word and in multiple persons: "Let us create." Pastor Post will preach and preside. At the end of the liturgy Pastor Kathy Nolte, Associate to the Bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod (ELCA), will lead the Rite of Farewell. Worship will close with a thunderous singing of "Holy, Holy, Holy," a fitting last word for the day. Following worship, Ascension will host a Festive Coffee Hour in Pastor Post's honor, which will include the giving of gifts and good wishes.

EASTER Festival of the Resurrection, April 5 - 8:30 and 11:00 a.m.

We gather for joyous worship and the return of Alleluia at both 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Easter Breakfast will feature freshly-made Swedish Pancakes with lingonberries and sausage. (A gluten-free option will also be offered.) Breakfast will be served from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Children will assemble on the front lawn for the Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 a.m.

Passion Sunday Cantata at Ascension, 4:30 p.m.

Come, Lord Jesus

We open each Sunday of the season with the lighting of Advent Candles by our children. Our hymns are both plaintive and hopeful, looking forward to that day when Christ will come again in glory. In this, the darkest time of year, our scripture texts lean into repentance--the need to turn our lives around, turn our hearts around, open our eyes--to God's work in the world. Even, especially, when it is hard to see.

Also, each Advent, we challenge ourselves to care more deeply for our neighbors. This Advent, our Advent Tree will invite shoppers to buy necessary items for our ministry partner, the Northfield Township Food Pantry: pet food, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, cereal. We encourage financial gifts for A Just Harvest, as they build a neighborhood cafe that will both teach cooking and restaurant skills, and provide a safe, nurturing place for its neighbors. Our children will host a Cookie Walk and collect quarters. We will hear from other ministry partners about their work to feed the hungry.

Away in a Manger

We offer two worship opportunities on Christmas Eve. At 4 p.m., we highlight our children and families with a simple liturgy and a pick-up pageant. At 7 p.m. we ponder the mystery of the Christ Child, God laid in our arms. Both services will include carols, communion and candles.

A Community Christmas

The First Sunday of Christmas is spent in the company of our neighbors, the Willow Road Congregations. Please join us on Sunday, December 28, 10 a.m. at Northfield Community Church, 400 Wagner Road, Northfield. Along with St. James the Less Episcopal Congregation we will gather around Lessons and Carols to greet the Christ Child. A reception will follow.

Always Reforming

Our Lutheran roots lie in the theological and cultural revolution of the 16th century that we have named "Reformation." We follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther and other reformers across the centuries, seeking to be more faith-full to scripture, more grace-full in the world, and more obedient to God's ways. We will mark the Reformation at Ascension on Reformation Sunday, October 26 at 10 a.m. with a special worship opportunity, followed by a German-themed Coffee Hour.

Our liturgy will follow the pattern of Luther's Die Deutsche Messe (The German Mass), using both ancient texts and contemporary translations. Worship will open with an extended organ/piano/lute prelude of music from the period, including some favorite Bach preludes. During worship we will sing our way through the great hymns of the Reformation, interspersed with teaching about the way those tunes and texts inspired a movement. The frosting on our Reformation cake will be a thundering organ/piano rendition of "Ein Feste Burg" ("A Mighty Fortress.) If you like to sing or learn or think, you'll want to join us for our Festival of the Reformation.

After worship we will gather around frothy mugs of (root) beer, and piles of pretzels for dipping.

We are always being reformed, reshaped, revived for service to the world God's love. Join us. Bring a friend. Prost!

Our Beautiful Celebration of Life Garden

Celebration of Life Garden Expansion Dedication

Ascension's Celebration of Life Garden was dedicated on All Saints Day 1998. In the intervening years, dozens of families have laid their loved ones to rest in the Garden, knowing their memory will be respected and the grounds cared for in perpetuity. Late last year, the Garden trustees realized the Garden was nearing capacity, and that, in order, to continue to provide a beautiful and respectful resting place for our members, the Garden would need to be expanded.

In cooperation with the congregation's leadership and the Village of Northbrook, the trustees oversaw the addition of two walls, Wisdom and Trust, which provide 104 additional interment spaces. We will gather to dedicate these new walls on Sunday, October 19, at 9:30 a.m. We will gather in the Garden to give thanks for those who have gone before us, and set this space apart for God's praise and honor and to comfort those who grieve.

May God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless those interred in this Garden, who share in God's eternal presence. May we know God's comfort, peace and the certain hope of resurrection and heavenly reunion with those who have finished their heavenly journey.

Following the dedication, we will move to the sanctuary for worship at 10 a.m.

On All Saints Sunday, November 2, we remember with thanksgiving those who have gone before us into the Kingdom of God.

In anticipation of that celebration, we invite you to write in our Book of Remembrance the names of loved ones who have died since last All Saints Day (November 1, 2024). The Book will be available during the month of October.

On All Saints Sunday, we will gather first in the Celebration of Life Garden at 9 a.m. to remember, with thanksgiving, loved ones interred there.

At 10 a.m., we will move to the sanctuary for worship with Holy Communion. During our prayers, we will name all the names recorded in our Book of Remembrance.

Godly Play Starting Soon!

Children are welcome and integral in all parts of our life together. We invite your children to join in the fun and learning.

Each Sunday, Godly Play children gather at 9:30 a.m. for Singing Time and then move to the Godly Play classroom at 10 a.m.

Godly Play is a Montessori method for Christian education. The method has been utilized in churches around the world. In Godly Play, children get to make meaning through story, wonder, and play. It's a way of nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.

We offer Godly Play for children age 3 through 3rd grade and Godly Play+ for children in grades 4-6.

Following their classroom time, the children join the congregation in the sanctuary for communion each week. You can learn about Godly Play at www.godlyplayfoundation.org.

Because we believe that God's Work is often accomplished by Our Hands, Ascension will be joining ELCA congregations across the country in a local God's Work Our Hands project. Along with four other Lutheran congregations, known as the Glenbrook Parish, we will offer two service opportunities on Saturday, September 6.

The Watersmeet Restoration—Northfield

We have only 20 spots available to us for this forest preserve stewardship day. Volunteers must be at least high-school age. The work is physical and outside. Please dress appropriate for the weather.

Feed My Starving Children—Libertyville

We have many volunteer spots available for this food packing day. Volunteers must be at least 5-years of age. There will be tasks for all abilities and the work is inside. Financial contributions are encouraged to support the work of Feed My Starving Children.

Financial contributions may be made to Ascension by check (memo GWOH). If you would like to give electronically, please contact the church office.

Last year we welcomed over 100 volunteers for God's Work Our Hands. You will want to be part of this hands-on, mission-focused, life-changing project.

On Wednesday, March 5, join Pastor Post (along with our church partners) for Ashes to Go at the following locations:

Winnetka Presbyterian Church (7:30-8:30 am, 12-1 pm)

Northfield Community Church (7:45-8:45 am) and

St. James the Less Episcopal Church (3:00-4:00 pm)

You need not leave your car--drive up to the servers, and they will impose ashes on your forehead and offer an Ash Wednesday blessing.

In this season of familiar songs and stories, a new hymn catches our ear:

Here is another familiar thing—the tension between the ways of God and the ways of the world. Many powerful forces colluded against God’s plan—Emperor Augustus ordered a census, King Herod tried to take the child's life. And yet, God’s purposes were accomplished—the Holy Child was born in a borrowed barn; he grew to full stature as Son of Mary and Son of God. We who celebrate that holy birth under unlikely circumstances, continue to pursue God’s ways in the world. As this new hymn sings, “for the weary and the worn, Jesus comes.”

A Challenge for Advent

Each Advent, we engage one of our primary ministry partners in providing tangible and financial support for their work.

This Advent, we are partnering with The Night Ministry, in support of their Pathways Transitional Living Program. As is our practice, we offer opportunities to Advocate, Education and Participate with partners whose work multiplies our own.

Advocate

The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization whose mission is to provide human connection, housing support, and health care to those who are unhoused or experiencing poverty. With an open heart, they compassionately accept each individual as they are and work alongside them to advocate for their immediate physical,

emotional, and social needs while affirming our shared humanity.

At Ascension, when we see need or opportunity, we engage it. To receive regular news and information about The Night Ministry, sign-up for their e-newsletter at thenightministry.org.

Educate

We offer two learning opportunities with this Advent Challenge. On Sunday, November 24, The Night Ministry CEO and President Carol J. Sharp will join us for worship and for coffee hour. She will describe the mission of The Night Ministry and launch the Advent Challenge.

On Sunday, December 1, Kristen Schneider, The Night Ministry Vice President of Finance and Operations, will describe the Advent Challenge in greater detail and invite your participation.

We offer three ways to provide tangible support for the Pathways program:

Gift Tags

The Advent Tree will be festooned with gift tags for specific items which you may purchase and deliver to Ascension during Advent.

The Big Ask—(with a Big Reach)

We are challenging ourselves to provide receive financial gifts totaling $10,000 to meet the following needs for Pathways participants:

Life Skill Courses

Pathways participants who have experienced homelessness will learn how to manage a home with skills including financial management, housekeeping and cleaning, and meal preparation.

Drivers Training Courses

Learning to drive is crucial skill for young people who desire to live independently. Drivers training courses are expensive, beyond the reach of Pathways participants.

Wish List

As Pathways participants learn life skills, such as cooking, small appliances like microwaves and air fryers are deeply desired, but are unaffordable.

Supply Closet

Young people new to caring for a home often forget to purchase ongoing cleaning and laundry supplies. The Supply Closet will provide paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and other items they will need on an ongoing basis.

Join Us for the Coming of Advent

In our own troubled lives, we find ourselves in one strange and dreadful strife or another every day. Advent is a season in which we explore the rich diversity of human existence and response in the face of circumstances not easily resolved. Rather than focusing solely on the manger, we will look beyond Bethlehem to the promise of new life in Christ now and always.

First Sunday of Advent: The Coming Days

Advent is about the “coming days.” God’s people have always lived in great expectation. The ancients anticipated a “righteous Branch to spring up for David.” The Thessalonians awaited “the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints.” Jesus’ contemporaries hoped for the time “to stand before the Son of Man.” With them we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of Christ in word and supper.

Second Sunday of Advent: The Coming Message

Forerunners and messengers advance the advent of our God. While John the baptizer’s voice in the wilderness may be the principal focus of the day, Malachi’s prophecy could as easily herald the coming Christ as forerunner of the Lord of hosts. Finally, all the baptized are called to participate in the sharing of the gospel. In so doing we prepare the way for the coming of Jesus and assist all people in capturing a vision of the “salvation of God.”

Third Sunday of Advent: The Coming Power

Christ’s presence in our midst in the wonder of the holy supper is cause for singing. The nearness of the God in prayer, in every circumstance, is cause for rejoicing. The coming of one “more powerful” than John, even with a winnowing fork in hand, is good news—and cause for exultation—for us who are being saved. Great joy is the tone for the third Sunday of Advent.

Fourth Sunday of Advent: The Coming Cradle

Cradle and cross are inextricably connected on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Between a lovely tribute to the little town of Bethlehem and Mary’s magnificent song of praise, the letter to the Hebrews reminds us in no uncertain terms that Christ’s advent is for “the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” It is the kind of tension in which the church always lives.

Your financial donation can be made through Ascension on Realm (select "Local Hunger”). If you prefer to make a food donation, items will be collected in the food pantry bin just inside the front door.

Can We Borrow Your Hands?

Because we believe that God's Work is often accomplished by Our Hands, Ascension will be joining ELCA congregations across the country in a local God's Work Our Hands project. Along with three other Northfield township congregations, we will assemble at Ascension Saturday, September 7, 2-4 p.m. to assemble 2000 hygiene kits for our ministry partner, The Night Ministry (TNM).

Last year we assembled 1000 kits. Why this year are we doing 2000? TNM distributes 2,000 hygiene kits at train stations, bus stops, and through their health ministry each month. Because the need is so great, the hygiene kits have been newly-configured to contain fewer essential items, and to be packaged in paper bags rather than plastic, in order to reduce potential waste.

Each congregation is asked to raise funds for its proportional share of the cost (based on average worship attendance at each). Ascension's share of the cost is $2,380. Please plan to make a financial gift to this annual effort. We will NOT be gathering the supplies, but will order them in bulk to save money. And, whether you are able to financially support this task or not, join us for our God's Work Our Hands event Saturday, September 7. We will have tasks for all ages and abilities.

Financial contributions may be made to Ascension by check (memo GWOH). If you would like to give electronically, please contact the church office.

Last year we welcomed over 100 volunteers for God's Work Our Hands. You will want to be part of this hands-on, mission-focused, life-changing project.

Learning While We Play

Our children gather around "Godly Play" each Sunday of the program year for a Bible story, crafts and activities. Godly Play strives to "make meaning through story, wonder and play." Children age 3 - grade 3 engage the Godly Play curriculum with caring, insightful and skilled instructors. In addition to the basic Godly Play curriculum, students in grades 4-6 enjoy Godly Play+. In Godly Play+ they are invited to learn and practice skills of worship leadership: reading, assisting, serving, ushering.

Before the Godly Play hour, our children sing with one of our music directors, learning new and old songs of the faith. They regularly sing in worship.

Please join us for Children's Music at 9:30 a.m., Godly Play and Godly Play+ at 10 a.m. each Sunday of the program year. Children join the congregation in the sanctuary for holy communion.

Come, Holy Spirt!

We will meet as Jesus' disciples met on the first Pentecost millennia ago. Eye witness accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit reported that the believers were amazed and astonished. Wouldn't we be? If "divided tongues as of fire" rested on our heads and our mouths were filled with languages we did not know, we might be amazed and astonished, as well.

Ascension celebrates Pentecost with a red-dressed sanctuary, majestic music, and multi-language readings. This year we will celebrate both Affirmation of Baptism and First Communion for a number of our children and teens. Please join us for the Festival of Pentecost, Sunday, May 19 at 10 a.m. Though we do not expect fire and language, we never know what amazing and astonishing events the Spirit might stir.

Lent Challenge: Seeking Justice for Those Who Have No Home

Habitat for Humanity

Kickoff: February 11, 2024

As part of our year-long Vitality Initiative, "Seeking Justice," during Lent we will partner with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit whose mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

The Lent Challenge will include vitality talks about Habitat, a children's home-building activity, All-Ascension Reads, and the Lent Tree. The Lent Tree will be festooned with ornaments inviting financial contributions to specific Habitat needs, and offering envelopes to contribute directly to a bigger goal.

We are working with Habitat for Humanity (Lake County) to schedule one or more build dates for Ascension volunteers.

ELCA’s Good Gifts Program is part of ELCA World Hunger, which supports churchwide ministries in 88 countries around the world. Good Gifts include God’s Global Barnyard along with other initiatives, including access to safe water, opportunities for women and children, agriculture programs, global health care, and international emergencies.

We invite your participation in this Advent Challenge in one or more of the following ways.

• Plan to honor family or friends with a Christmas donation/gift in their name to the ELCA Good Gifts project(s) of your choice.

• Choose one or more ornaments representing God’s Global Barnyard or other program(s) from the Advent Tree beginning December 3.

• Put the ornament(s) you choose on your tree at home to remind everyone of your response to worldwide hunger needs.

• From the baskets below the tree, take the greeting card(s) that match your ornaments. Send or give those cards to the people you honor with your donation.

As part of our Vitality Initiative "Seeking Justice for Refugees and Immigrants," we want to learn more about our own family's migrant journeys.

Please complete our ancestry poll about ONE of your ancestors by October 15. The poll can be found in the weekly eblast or as an insert in Sunday's bulletin. The results will be compiled anonymously.

Please plan to join us for lunch after worship Sunday, October 22. At the luncheon, we will share the results of the poll and tell our ancestor stories to one another. Even if you are unable to attend the luncheon, we ask you to complete the poll.

Blessing of the (Stuffed) Animals

In the name of St. Francis of Assisi

Each fall, congregations give thanks for the example of St. Francis of Assisi, whose both celebrated and protected creation's creatures. It is customary to offer a Blessing of the Animals near his Feast Day, October 4. In years past, we have blessed all sorts of animals in all sorts of ways, but the risk of cat scratch or turtle salmonella or horse droppings have rendered such events problematic. Instead, we invite you to bring your favorite soft animal friend, or a photo of a live animal friend to worship Sunday, October 8. We will celebrate the Blessing of the (Stuffed) Animals during worship.

After the blessing we will sing a new hymn, "Earth is full of wit and wisdom" whose lyrics make us all laugh.

Earth is full of wit and wisdom, sounding God's delighted laugh,

From the tiny roly poly to the tree-top-tall giraffe.

All creation sings in wonder, even rocks and trees rejoice

Vitality Initiative

Each year, Ascension takes on a year-long initiative to guide our ministry in the coming program year. Recent initiatives include homelessness, racism, education, and change each encompassing the three components of Educate, Advocate and Participate.

For the months of September and October, we engage in the plight of refugees and immigrants.

Join us on Sunday, September 17 at 9:30 a.m. for the first Vitality Talk in the series, "Setting the Table: Justice for Refugees and Immigrants".

In worship, Pastor will introduce and preach on this year’s initiative and then we’ll sing it! (ACS 1062)

Godly Play Resumes September 10! (And there's something new this year...)

What is Godly Play?

Godly Play is a Sunday School curriculum that focuses on making meaning through story, wonder, and play. Nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.

As Godly Play (for children age 3-grade 3) resumes this year, we will also launch Godly Play+ (for children in grades 4-6).

Each Sunday, we invite children of all ages to come and sing in Children's Music from 9:45 a.m.-10:00 a.m., followed by Godly Play and Godly Play+.

Our children will then join the congregation for Holy Communion.

Our goal with the Godly Play+ children is to equip them for greater involvement in the congregation's life through story, song and service.

Of course, if children in any age group prefer to worship with their parents, they are certainly welcome to do so.

ABC meetings are held mostly at Ascension on the second Tuesday of each month (third Tuesday in October) at 10:30 a.m. The group meets and enjoys refreshments while discussing the book of the month. Meetings usually last until about noon.

Please join us on Thursday, June 29 in fellowship hall to view pictures and learn of the experiences of our Ascension travelers experienced on their recent trip to the Holy Land and Jordan. Gail and Charlie Price, Susan Vonnegut, and Alice and Ken Kosnik will share highlights and stories from this amazing pilgrimage. This evening presentation will allow adequate time for all to learn about this journey of a lifetime, made with other members of the Metro Chicago Synod. All are welcome. No registration required. Middle Eastern refreshments will be served at 6:45 p.m., with the program starting promptly at 7:00 p.m.

We Feed the Hungry

Our congregation has been a trusted partner of A Just Harvest, serving hungry people in the Rogers Park community of Chicago for many decades. We serve a hot lunch to 125 hungry neighbors of A Just Harvest, people who would experience food insecurity without this assistance. Our congregation provides ingredients for the meal and the volunteers to serve it for the third Tuesday of each month. You are invited to take part by:

Picking up preordered, prepaid food and delivering it to A Just Harvest, 7649 N Paulina St, Chicago (on set day).
Donating fruit or cookies, bringing items to church before our serving day.
Serving lunch from noon to 2:00 pm. (Volunteers meet at Ascension Church at 10:30 and travel together to the Kitchen, returning to church by 2:30 p.m.)
Making a financial contribution to support the purchase of food. (Financial contributions may be made using Realm, specifying A Just Harvest, or leaving a check in the church office.)

A note about Easter shoes: Ascension’s front lawn becomes a swimming pool after a heavy rain. If the days continue to be as rainy as they have been, you might want to consider putting your children in rain boots for the Egg Hunt, rather than new patent leather shoes. I’ll warn the Easter Bunny so their paws don’t get muddy.

Seven Last Words, A Cantata for Easter

Singers and instrumentalists from Ascension and St. James the Less Episcopal Church join guest musicians to welcome Holy Week with the cantata Seven Last Words (Septum Ultima Verba), by composer Michael John Trotter, voiced by singers, winds, horns and piano. Based on the set of texts often used during Holy Week to contemplate Jesus' crucifixion, the Seven Last Words are haunting in their simplicity, but complex in the range of emotions they express.

Ascension is honored to host this invitation to Holy Week on Sunday, April 2, 4:30 p.m. No reservations are required. The concert is free and open to the public.

A Community Gathered Around Ashes

Lent Begins with Ash Wednesday--February 22, 2023

We gather with neighbors and community members to begin the season of Lent with

the imposition of ashes on our foreheads. Three Northfield congregations--Ascension Lutheran, Northfield Community and St. James the Less Episcopal--invite you to receive ashes in a drive-by fashion and to worship together in the evening.

Ashes To Go in the Morning, 8:00-9:30 a.m.

Ashes will be waiting for you in the colonnades Ash Wednesday morning.

You need not leave your car--drive up to the servers, and they will impose ashes on your forehead and offer an Ash Wednesday blessing.

I was recently invited to an event at the mosque one of my neighbors attends. He said, “Please come. It starts at 4. There will be food and prayers.”

I’m sure that to him, a member of the mosque, that invitation made perfect sense. But to me, who had never attended an event like that in a mosque? I had a million questions. Would the event start promptly at 4 or was that only the gathering time? Should I cover my hair; take off my shoes? Would women and men pray together? What would we eat? How long would the event last? Would they speak English? Would there be an offering? The mosque is a big building—where would I find him?

In fact, when I arrived at the mosque, my fears fled. I was early and over-dressed. I hadn’t budgeted enough time. But, my neighbor and members of the mosque could not have been more welcoming. I still wish I had been better prepared.

I wonder if we at Ascension make assumptions about the questions our guests and visitors might ask, especially if they are not Lutheran Christians who understand our “shorthand.” Here’s what you can expect when you join us for worship at Ascension. (And I hope you

do.)

Affiliation

We are congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Information about our denomination’s faith commitments can be found at www.elca.org/faith . There you can read about our understanding of scripture, our teaching about God, our ecumenical, interfaith and social commitments.

Worship

We are a liturgical church, which means we follow a pattern of worship common to Lutherans, but with local variations. Our music ranges from contemporary to traditional, and includes cantors, ensembles, instrumentalists and congregational singing. We are accompanied by piano, organ, guitar and drums, as appropriate for the music. Our Directors of Music are classically trained and wonderfully creative. We are a singing

congregation, as happy to sing old favorites as to try something new.

We offer a single worship service on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. We begin promptly at 10, but worshippers trickle in for about 15 minutes after that. Worship typically lasts about an hour.

We celebrate Holy Communion each week using gluten-free bread and non-alcoholic wine. All are welcome at the table. Abstaining from the meal is also okay—no one will question or coerce you.

We practice infant baptism, which means that believers of any age are welcome at the font. To learn more about our baptism or communion practice, be in touch.

Facility

Our facility is fully accessible. Our parking lot is large, with clearly marked parking for drivers with disability tags. There are 19 entrances to our building (most of them locked), but on Sunday mornings and during the week we use the front entrance—look for the large glass doors under a white triangle-shaped awning just off the Sunset Ridge entrance.

Attire

Worship attire is as casual or formal as you choose. One of our little girls wears a tutu every week. One of our high school boys often comes in his soccer uniform. Some wear jeans and polo shirts, and some wear suits or dresses. We want you to be comfortable among us. I vest with alb, stole and chasuble; our worship assistants wear albs, as well.

Children

Children are welcome and integral in all parts of our life together. Activity bags are provided in the sanctuary for children who remain with their parents. Children are also welcome in our staffed nursery (infants – 3 years of age) or in the Godly Play classroom (3 years of age – 3rd grade). Godly Play children gather at 9:30 a.m. for Singing Time and then move to the Godly Play classroom at 10 a.m. They join the congregation in the sanctuary for communion each week. Offering

Our ministry is funded primarily by the generosity of our members and friends. Most of our members and friends practice online giving. We are happy to tell you about that, if you are interested. We also pass the offering plate on Sunday. Your financial support is welcome, but not necessary.

Food

We gather for a social time after worship each week. Coffee and cold beverages are served; some sort of sweet or treat is also offered. That time after worship is as holy as is the time we spend in the sanctuary. We hope you will join us for that, as well.

Safety Protocols

Post-pandemic, we no longer require mask-wearing in the building, or practice strict distancing protocols. But some choose to wear a mask or sit apart. We encourage you to do whatever makes you feel safe.

Hymns will be selected from ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) randomly from

suggestions provided by those in attendance. Food and beverage will be available for

purchase.

This is a terrific opportunity to strengthen our bonds in ministry, to sing favorite hymns

and maybe learn a few new ones. No reservations needed. You are encouraged to bring

friends and neighbors.

What is A Just Harvest?

When in-person daily meal service to hungry people in the Rogers Park community was necessarily suspended during the pandemic, Lutheran Church of the Ascension continued supporting our decades-long ministry partner, A Just Harvest Community Kitchen, by providing food for one meal a month. A Just Harvest used our food donations to prepare take home and home delivered meals for their clients. Missing was the sense of community that develops when people gather at table to share food and fellowship.

In early November, that sense of community was restored! The Kitchen reopened for LUNCH service seven days a week. Following the previous schedule, Ascension will provide food for one meal each month (the third Tuesday of the month). Prior volunteers are eager to return to in-person service and welcome you to join in!

Please consider supporting Ascension's ministry with A Just Harvest by donating needed food items, transporting food items to the facility, assisting on site cooks to prepare and serve the meal. Financial donations are also appreciated! Contact the office to sign up today!

Epiphany: Celebration and Season

Epiphany Day, January 6, found Pastor JoAnn Post on her tiptoes, etching an Epiphany greeting on the wall above the font:

20 + C + M + B + 22. In keeping with an ancient custom to inscribe a welcome for guests and strangers above the home’s entrance, as she wrote, she read:

The magi of old known as Caspar (C) , Melchior (M), and Balthasar (B) followed the star of God’s Son who came to dwell among us two thousand (20) and twenty-three (23) years ago. Christ, bless this house, and remain with us throughout the year.

But Epiphany is more than a day; it is also a season. During the Season of Epiphany, we read scripture texts of Jesus being revealed to the world. Part of what is revealed is the fact that all people, regardless of age or any other defining factor, are welcome in our assembly and can be baptized. The texts for the season identify Jesus as “Lamb of God.” They urge agreement in Christian community. They urge repentance for sins individual and corporate. They remind us of Jesus’ identity and ours.

The Season of Epiphany ends on February 19, with a bookend. On the first Sunday after Epiphany Jesus was named “Son, Beloved” in his baptism. On the last Sunday, Transfiguration Sunday, the voice speaks again.

All Ascension Reads

What? Is that a typo? No, The Nones is the name given to an increasingly significant group of Americans who say they have no religious affiliation – a group growing from just 5% of the population in 1972 to 23.7% in 2018!

As part of our focus on CHANGE this year, our next All Ascension Reads choice is The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going by Ryan P. Burge. In a departure from our usual format, we will discuss one of the five chapters of the book at 9:30 each Sunday February 19 through March 19. Each chapter will be facilitated by a different leader. This format should make it easy to participate!

Copies of the book will be available to borrow from church starting next Sunday or the book can be purchased easily from Amazon. Plan now to discuss chapter one, “What Does the American Religious Landscape Look Like?” at 9:30 on February 19!

One Tree Many Branches Concert Series

“One Tree Many Branches” sprouted on the North Shore over a decade ago, when Lutheran Church of the Ascension Directors of Music Mischa Zupko and Minkyoo Shin were challenged to leverage their tremendous musical gifts to create a performance series that would open Ascension ’s soul to the broader community... through the gift of music and the performing arts.

In 2012, “One Tree Many Branches” became the donor-sustained series that it is today.

The series seeks to deliver performances across the musical spectrum... performances that educate, surprise, challenge, and of course, entertain! The series features a diverse variety of top tier performers from Chicagoland and around the world. You meet the artists in the comfort of our musical living room – the acoustically wonderful sanctuary of Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield, Illinois.

Concerts are held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and are followed by the opportunity to meet the artists in an intimate setting. This series is our gift to the community, and we ’re very grateful to our donors and supporters who make it happen! Join us. Take a seat. Give if you choose.

Advent Challenge: Change the Life of a Child

This Advent , we are partnering with Holy Family School

Each Advent, Ascension takes on a special challenge with one of our ministry partners. This advent we are partnering with Holy Family School to provide financial support for six specific needs they have identified. The Advent Tree in Fellowship Hall will be festooned with gift tags, inviting you to provide financial support toward a specific need. (We will not be buying actual items.). Each tag includes the item name and the exact cost; any amount toward that item is also welcome.

The tags will be for Backpack $50 or any amount, Blazer $75 or any amount, Field Trip $100 or any amount, Chromebook $200 or any amount, Uniform $250 or any amount.

We also present a larger challenge: Holy Family School is in need of desk/chair sets at the cost of $2500 each. We have challenged ourselves to provide 5 desk/chair sets for a total of $12,500. You may use the offering envelopes on the Advent Tree to make a financial gift of any amount toward this goal, or make your gift on Realm.

Our children will participate in the Advent Challenge by hosting a Cookie Walk on Sunday, December 18. All proceeds of the Walk will be gifted to Holy Family School.

The Advent Challenge will end Sunday, December 18.

Don't miss the Holiday Cookie Walk on Sunday, December 18 immediately after worship.

$10 buys you a box to fill with cookies from each cookie station around Fellowship Hall.

Proceeds will support this year's Advent Challenge.

After you visit each cookie station, grab a cup of hot cocoa or coffee and enjoy some sweet treats while the Godly Play kids lead us in some well-known Christmas carols around the tree.

We want your cookies! Donations of cookies are wanted. Please sign up by December 11 via Signup.com and have your donated delights at church by December 18. We are asking for a two dozen minimum. While this is a great time to feature your secret family recipe, store bought cookies will gladly be accepted!
