Youth Ministries

Welcome to the Youth Ministries Page!  Here you can discover the programs and opportunities we have for our various ministries for children, confirmation, and high school students.  Anyone is welcome to attend any of our events whether on site at Ascension or out in the community!  Age-appropriate Bibles are available for children through 8th grade.

For more information on any of our youth programs please contact the church office at 847-446-8335.

Sunday School

On Sunday morning, children ages three through Grade 3 are engaged in Godly Play, a Montessori-based Christian education model. Through story, discussion and free play, children learn the stories of the faith. (Children older than Grade 4 are also welcome to join the class.) Children are first invited to sing with Director of Music Minkyoo Shin at 9:30 a.m. Godly Play begins at 9:45 a.m. and continues through the worship hour. Children will be returned to their parents in the sanctuary for communion. If you have questions about Godly Play, please contact Sunday School Coordinator Kate Berlin at

In baptism, we promise to "help our children grow in the Christian faith and life."  At Ascension, we keep that promise in many ways, one of which is providing a special period of instruction for our young people, grades 4-7.  Through a combination of meetings at church with the Pastor, outings and service projects and an annual retreat in Wisconsin, we prepare them to Affirm their Baptisms--publicly claiming the faith in which they have been raised.  The pastor and congregational lay leaders provide both instruction and models of the faith lived out in daily life.

High School

At Ascension, our High School Youth have opportunities to deepen their faith, make connections with other Christians and to develop leadership skills within the church and the community.  High School youth are encouraged to volunteer to be part of the passions of the church which may include:

  • Providing assistance to others through service ministries
  • Serving as a cantor, worship leader, communion server or reader during worship
  • Engaging in Christian education as a teaching assistant or confirmation leader
  • Coordinating hospitality following Sunday Worship or an event
  • Participating and providing input in educational opportunities offered through forums, planning sessions or retreats
  • Sharing your gifts as a musician
